Panthers face football royalty on Friday

November 21, 2013

The Magnet Cove Panthers (8-2-1) will have one of their biggest tests of the season when they host the Rison Wildcats (7-3) in the second round of the Class 2A state football playoffs.
When it comes to high school football in the state of Arkansas, few teams have had more success than Rison.
In their school’s history, the Wildcats have posted a 65-30 record.
Their head coach, Clay Totty, has a career record of 145-41-1, putting him near the top of all of the active coaches in the state.

Well-rested Beavers start their march toward Little Rock

November 21, 2013

As with the Malvern Leopards, the similarities between this year’s Glen Rose Beavers (10-1) squad and the one that advanced to the 3A state championship game in 2012 are uncanny.
In 2012, Glen Rose started the season with a loss in the first game of the year to Malvern, before decimating every team remaining in their regular-season schedule.
This year, the Beavers lost their opening game on the road to Malvern by just eight points.
There is a bit of an asterisk by that game for Glen Rose, as they were missing four starters in that game, including running back Carlos Burton.

Leopards eye another trip to War Memorial Stadium

November 21, 2013

The similarities between this year’s Malvern Leopards’ team and the 2011 team that advanced to the 4A state championship game at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock are staggering.
That season, Malvern lost one nonconference game to Hot Springs Lakeside and finished second in the 7-4A Conference after falling to an overpowering Pulaski Academy team.
The 2011 squad was also known for its tremendous defense, imposing its will on each and every playoff opponent.
Fast-forward two years and we see a very similar Leopards’ team.

Magnet Cove takes three from Ouachita

November 21, 2013

Magnet Cove headed to Ouachita High School Tuesday night to play four basketball games, winning the first three.
In the first game, between the junior girls’ teams, Magnet Cove rallied for a 37-34 victory.
Ouachita jumped out to a big 13-2 lead after one quarter was in the books and held a commanding 25-10 lead at the half.
In the second half, however, the Junior Lady Panthers’ defense stepped up and held Ouachita to just nine points in the second half, including a third quarter dominated by Magnet Cove 14-2.

Bismarck wins two games at Harmony Grove

November 21, 2013

On Tuesday night, all four of Bismarck’s basketball teams made the trip over to Haskell to take on Benton Harmony Grove.
The first game was a matchup of the junior girls’ teams, with the Junior Lady Lions falling 35-18 because of turnovers and cold shooting.
Bismarck quickly found itself down in a 11-6 hole after the first quarter and saw that deficit grow to 20-10 by halftime.
As the game entered the final quarter, the Junior Lady Cardinals held a 29-16 lead.

Hot Spring County Sportlight: Isaac Wright

November 21, 2013

When you imagine the typical defensive lineman, what comes to mind?
A mean, hard-hitting player that enjoys the punishment he inflicts upon his opponents?
Most of the time, yes.
What about a soft-spoken and polite student council president with a love of poetry?
Not usually, which is what makes Malvern senior nose guard (and occasional right guard) Isaac Wright something different.
Wright heads up the defensive front line of the Malvern Leopards, who are in one of their best three-year stretches in decades.

This Week's Coaches and Game of the Week

One round of the football playoffs are behind us and the second round is just a day away.
The local teams that had first-round games made the most of their opportunities, coming away with big wins.
Because of that, we will have multiple Coaches and Games of the Week this week.
For the Coaches of the Week, we have Malvern head coach Mike Scarbrough and Magnet Cove’s Ronnie Efird.
