Magnet Cove FFA takes a swing at fighting hunger

July 18, 2013

Kristyn Sheets, the agricultural education and FFA teacher at Magnet Cove, is teaching more than farming and ranching. Sheets is teaching self-sufficiency and community service.

“Hunger doesn’t take the summer off so neither are members from the Magnet Cove FFA Chapter,” said Sheets.

Despite the heat, football camps are loads of fun

July 18, 2013

When the oppressive heat of summer hits, the last thing you want to do is be out in the weather exerting yourself.

But with football camps, I see it from another perspective. After being deprived of the sport for six months, I will take any football I can get.

I feel for the players out on the field, I really do. I couldn’t imagine putting on all the gear they have to wear as they run in full-speed contact drills.

Man shot by police in LR

July 17, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Authorities say an SUV driven by a man who was fatally shot by Little Rock police wasn't actually stolen, although officers thought it may have been stolen shortly before the driver was killed.

Little Rock Police said Monday that an SUV driven by 26-year-old Deon Williams appeared to match the description of a stolen vehicle.
However, Little Rock Police spokeswoman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said Tuesday that the vehicle wasn't actually stolen.

Authorities say Williams fled from police and produced a gun before an officer shot and killed him.

Some sports deserve more recognition

July 17, 2013

Over the last two weeks, I have been writing a series of articles explaining sports to those who may be new to them.

So far I have covered the biggest sports in America.

In upcoming editions, I will cover some of the more obscure sports, some of which are rather deserving of a closer look.

Woman dies of strangulation

July 16, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Pulaski County authorities have arrested a man for the strangling death of a woman whose body was found in a wooded area.
Officials say 36-year-old James Clyde Martin is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Robbin Gore.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that Martin confessed to striking Gore and fatally strangling her with a belt.

Officials say the body was dumped in woods near the Dixon Manor Mobile Home Park.

A fisherman found the body on Friday. Relatives told authorities that Gore hadn't been heard from since July 4.

July 16, 2013

JONES MILL — A disturbance was reported to the Hot Spring County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon at the Remmel Dam Landing in the Jones Mill area.

Deputies on the scene said a fight between two men had heated to the point that one hit the other with a baseball bat.

There’s no real reason for professional all-star games

July 16, 2013

Tonight, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played and I am having a real hard time caring about it.

For one, why is the game played in the middle of the season? That doesn’t give you an accurate representation of who the best players in the league are for the current season.

Also, why play the game at all?
