Keeping your head up a must in sports

February 28, 2013

We’ve all seen it happen. If you played a sport yourself, you may have done it at one time or another yourself.
It’s when a player makes a bonehead play that turns the ball over or thinks he was fouled on a shot and instead of immediately getting back on defense, he (or she) will stand there for a moment and pout before jogging back down the court.
I see it all the time on the college level. A player will be knocked down and a foul should have been called.

Bismarck wrestling team excels in state tournament

February 28, 2013

On Friday and Saturday, the Bismarck wrestling team took part in the 2013 state wrestling tournament at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Bismarck was grouped with all schools from Class 1A to Class 5A and came out of the tournament with a fifth place finish behind Maumelle (first), Beebe, Central Arkansas Christian and Little Rock Christian.
The team did well as a group, but there were many individual performances that stood out for the Lions.

Lady Lions out in first round

February 28, 2013

The Bismarck Lady Lions had a monumental task in front of them in the first round of the 3A state tournament at Riverview High School in Searcy.
They had drawn Greenland, one of the best 3A girls’ teams in the state.
Bismarck gave a valiant effort, but in the end, Greenland was too much, winning the game 51-22.
A slow start led to the Lady Lions’ eventual downfall, as Bismarck scored just four points in each of the first two quarters (as well as the fourth).
At the end of the first quarter, Bismarck trailed 11-4, but were still in striking range.

Lady Panthers open state tournament with win

February 28, 2013

The Magnet Cove Lady Leopards are on a roll.
They breezed through the district tournament two weeks ago and the regional tournament last week.
Last night, they played their first game in the 2013 2A state tournament at Marmaduke High School.
As the No. 1 seed from their region, Magnet Cove was matched up against a No. 4 seed, Pangburn.
At first it appeared the Lady Panthers were going to blow out Pangburn, but the pesky No. 4 seed wouldn’t go away until the end.

Malvern inventor hopes his product makes eating easy

February 24, 2013

People think about a lot of different things when confined to a hospital bed. Bill Morris was dwelling on one thing. He wondered when he could get out of the hospital to eat some crab legs. Furthermore, he wondered what would be the best way to get at the meat of the crab legs without dealing with clumsy crab leg crackers for trying to open them with a fork, which more often that not results in twisted and bent forks.
Eating crab legs is obviously a passion Morris possesses.

Up to 12,000 US, allied troops for Afghanistan

February 23, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and its NATO allies revealed Friday they may keep as many as 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after the combat mission ends next year, largely American forces tasked with hunting down remnants of al-Qaida and helping Afghan forces with their own security.

Patience with the 11-year-old war has grown thin in the U.S. and Europe, yet Washington and its allies feel they cannot pick up and leave without risking a repeat of what happened in Afghanistan after Soviet troops withdrew in 1989: Attention turned elsewhere, the Taliban grabbed power and al-Qaida found refuge.

Arkansas officially a bubble team now

February 22, 2013

Last night’s game between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Georgia Bulldogs was not a pretty one, but the Hogs pulled out a two-point victory at home thanks once again to late-game heroics by BJ Young.
The win moves Arkansas’ record to 17-9 on the season and 8-5 in Southeastern Conference play.
I think that makes Arkansas a team on the verge of the NCAA tournament right now, even though I and many other people wrote them off as dead after the loss at Vanderbilt.
If they can continue to win their home games...

The Magnet Cove Junior High and High School track teams have been a force to be reckoned with all...
Two local teams played their first games of the district tournament season yesterday, with both...
There are few things on the planet that I enjoy more than bringing all of you the latest local...
