A look at the 2014 Class 3A playoffs

November 12, 2014

For the last nine years, there has been a staple in the Class 3A playoffs that is missing this year — the Glen Rose Beavers. The Beavers’ loss on Friday night knocked them out of contention for the playoffs for the first time since 2005 — two years before their state championship.
Hot Spring County will still be represented in this year’s 3A playoffs by the Bismarck Lions, who are making their first trip back to the postseason since 2012 (when they went to back-to-back playoffs).

The regular season is over, and eyes now look toward the postseason as the first round of the Class 4A playoffs are set to begin on Friday, Nov. 14.
The lone team from this area in the 4A Classification — the Malvern Leopards — have earned their spot in the field of 30, with the No. 3 seed from the 7-4A Conference.
The Leopards will face off against the Cave City Cavemen at Claude Mann Stadium at 7 p.m. and are looking to make their way deep into the playoffs.

Glen Rose's season comes to an end

For the first time since the 2005 season, the Glen Rose Beavers will be sitting at home during the playoff season.
The Beavers (2-8 overall and 2-5 in the 5-3A Conference) saw their season come to an end with a 56-28 loss on the road to the Little Rock Episcopal Wildcats (9-1 overall and 6-1 in the 5-3A Conference).
Glen Rose found itself down early after Little Rock Episcopal’s offense took over in the first quarter.
The Wildcats used a 47-yard run to score the first touchdown of the game with 10:26 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Malvern Leopards (7-3 overall and 5-2 in the 7-4A Conference) secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 4A playoffs with a 47-34 win over the Arkadelphia Badgers (7-3 overall and 5-3 in the 7-4A Conference) at Claude Mann Stadium on Friday, Nov. 7.
In the first half the game, the story was the Malvern defense stopping Arkadelphia at almost every turn and holding the Badgers offense scoreless in the first two quarters.
In fact, the only Arkadelphia score came on a long punt return by the Badgers.

Junior Panthers win conference championship

November 12, 2014

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Magnet Cove Junior Panthers football team traveled to Cutter Morning Star to take on the Junior Eagles with the 5-2A Conference title on the line.
The Junior Panthers’ defense stood tall to get the 18-0 shutout on the road to secure Magnet Cove’s eighth win in a row to improve their record to 8-1 overall and stay perfect in conference play with a 7-0 record.
The defense set the tone of the game for the Junior Panthers when Cade Asher intercepted a pass on the Junior Eagles’ 30-yard-line.

Lions fall to fifth place with loss

November 12, 2014

The Bismarck Lions (4-6, 2-5 in the 5-3A Conference) saw their regular season end with a 41-26 loss on the road against the Centerpoint Knights (4-6, 4-3 in the 5-3A Conference).
But unless the Glen Rose Beavers pull off the upset on the road against the Little Rock Episcopal Wildcats, Bismarck will be going to the playoffs as the No. 5 seed in the 5-3A Conference.
Bismarck held its own against Centerpoint for much of the first half, and the Lions even held a 20-19 lead at one point before the Knights’ offense came alive in the second half.

Poyen secures second place

November 12, 2014

The Poyen Indians (6-4, 5-2 in the 5-2A Conference) saw their five-game winning streak snapped at home by way of a 15-13 loss to the England Lions (8-2, 5-2 in the 5-2A Conference), but the Indians were able to earn the No. 2 seed from the conference thanks to a three-way tie-breaker with England and Magnet Cove.
Poyen finished the season with 57 tie-breaker points, putting them ahead of Magnet Cove (third place), which had 55 points and England (fourth place), which had 54 points.
