Finding science at the library

July 2, 2014

The Science Club was held at the Malvern/Hot Spring County Library Thursday, June 26 and they made Oobleck. Matthew Taber (standing) gave the kids a lesson in fluid dynamics and explained the basic states of matter and their physical properties. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid. It acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. It is made out of a mixture of corn starch and water. Oobleck gets its name from the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck. (Photo by Mi Vaughn available on MDR website)

Magnet Cove School receives GIF Grant

The Magnet Cove School District recently received a grant for $20,000 from West Central Arkansas Planning and Development District (WCAPDD). The grant will assist the Magnet Cove School District with renovations of the baseball field and purchase new equipment. The WCAPDD General Improvement Fund grant program is to provide funding for community and economic development projects within a 10-county service area. Rep. Brickfest will use "Brick Bucks" currency

The MDR just learned that this year's Brickfest will be using Brick Bucks as currency for food vendors, drink stations and carnival rides. $1= 1 Brick Buck. Brick Bucks can be purchased at four locations at Malvern City Park. One of those locations will accept debit and credit cards. More details about Brick Bucks will be included in the Saturday MDR.

Brickfest Corrections:

Information provided to the Malvern Daily Record from the Brickfest Committee was incorrect regarding sponsorship of the pro bull riding event and parking. The correct information is:

The Malvern Tire Company Brickfest Bull Bash is presented by Mahindra Tractors of Malvern. In addition to Malvern Tire and Mahindra Tractors of Malvern, sponsors of the event are Teeter Motor Co., Southern Bancorp, Rent-a-Center, Horns Used Cars, Sykes Enterprises, Malvern Power Equipment and Red River Dodge.

Jones receives Farm Credit scholarship

Levi Jones, a 2014 Glen Rose High School graduate, was one of 20 western Arkansas students awarded a $1,000 academic scholarship from Farm Credit of Western Arkansas.
Jones is attending Arkansas Tech University this fall and plans to pursue an Agriculture Education degree. He is the son of John and Tara Jones of Malvern.
“We proudly award this well-deserved scholarship in recognition of Levi’s many academic accomplishments and student leadership,” explains Farm Credit CEO Glen Manchester.

Brickfest events finalized

Brickfest is just a week away and things are falling into place, according to Brenda Weldon, music coordinator of the festival. Weldon put to rest rumors about any uncertainties regarding funding for scheduled entertainment. “Sykes is the presenting sponsor as the biggest donor to the festival,” she said. In addition to monetary donations, Sykes has also provided volunteers who will help with parking and other festival responsibilities, she said.

Road recognition

Resident Engineer Tim Baber (right) of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, presents Hot Spring County Judge Bill Scrimshire with a plaque from the Arkansas Asphalt Pavement Association in recognition for quality asphalt paving for two county roads in Region 5, CC Road and Amity Road. Farm Bureau claims adjusters win honors at recent conference

Above: Farm Bureau claims adjuster Michael McCrary (center) of Malvern was named the 2014 District Two Adjuster of the Year during the 61st annual Farm Bureau Claims Conference June 5 in Hot Springs. Forrest Fletcher (left), district two claims manager, and John Bonner (right), vice president of claims, presented the award to McCrary. The award is given annually to the adjuster in each of the nine claims districts who shows the most proficient job skills, outstanding leadership, professionalism and dedication during the previous year.
