MMS students score high on ACT

Four Malvern Middle School students received recognition from Duke University’s Talent Identification Program at the awards ceremony held at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. These seventh grade students took the ACT test along with senior high students from around the nation and scored 21 or above in one or more of the core areas. Nathan Cowling received national as well as state recognition for his achievement. The students are Nathan Cowling, Chance Lund, Zaine Stoecker and Taylor Doddridge. (Photo submitted)

Ambulances online

LifeNet began officially operating its ambulance service in Malvern on Sunday, June 1. According to Robin Halbert, Hot Spring County 911 director, LifeNet software has been installed on computers at Hot Spring County 911 which allows dispatchers to view the location of ambulances.

David Coston, general manager of Malvern Water Works, opened the Malvern City Council finance meeting Monday night, June 2, with the topic of raising water utility deposits. Coston said he wants to raise residential homeowners’ deposits to $75 from $50. As of now, the renter’s deposit is $75 and MWW wants to raise that to $100. Coston said he wants to increase commercial deposits from $50 to $100. Coston approached the matter of raising the rates as a comparison to paying first and last month’s rent.

Saturday storms create flash flooding

This past Saturday, May 31, much of the Malvern area saw a tremendous amount of rainfall. According to Robin Halbert, director of 911, Malvern experienced approximately 2 1/2 inches of rain fall in a very short amount of time.

ProMed sues city, LifeNet

ProMed Ambulance filed a motion for preliminary injunction in federal court around noon on Friday, May 30, in hopes of preventing the implementation of LifeNet as the city’s exclusive ambulance provider. ProMed also filed a “Brief in Support of Motion for Preliminary Injunction,” a “Summons in Civil Action” to the City of Malvern and LifeNet, Inc., and a “Verified Complaint for Declaratory Judgment, and Preliminary and Permanent Injunction for Damages” which asks the federal court to declare the city’s contract with LifeNet null and void.

Wilson Student Council and homerooms help tornado victims

The Wilson Intermediate School student council hosted a change collection in each homeroom and raised $817 for tornado victims in the Vilonia and Mayflower areas. They voted to add money from their club's treasury to round the number up to $1000.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2586 held their installation of officers on Tuesday, May 20. They were sworn in by the state officer as: Commander Robert Lafond, Veteran Service Officer Membership Chair Nelson Bailey, Adjutant Nathan Turner, 1st Year Trustee Boyd Johnson, Quartermaster David Baum, Junior-Vice Commander Tom Arnold, Judge Advocate Randy Buie, 3rd Year Trustee Mark Korsmeier, 2nd Year Trustee Wendell Dawson.
