Brickfest Baby Contest registration

June 21, 2013

Brickfest Baby Contest will be held Saturday, June 29 at City Park. The event is sponsored by Farmers Bank & Trust.
Early registration is $10 at any Farmers Bank and Trust location or Malvern Chamber of Commerce. Saturday registration is from 8 until 8:45 a.m. and will fee will be $15. Contest starts at 9 a.m.

Judge Williams honored for service

The Honorable Chris E Williams, currently Circuit Judge of the Seventh Judicial District has finished a 12-year appointment for service as Chairperson on the Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission.
Judge Williams was appointed by the Supreme Court of Arkansas in July of 2001 for his first six-year appointment and reappointed for a second six-year term beginning July of 2007.
In July of 2012, Judge Williams was elected chairperson of the commission and the JDDC is grateful for his dedicated years of service to the judiciary of the State of Arkansas.

Donaldson bridge closing

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says a routine bridge inspection will mean that a lane of Highway 67 at Donaldson will be closed this week.
The department says crews will inspect the Union Pacific Railroad overpass on Highway 67 on Wednesday — weather permitting. The work will mean the closing of the northbound lane of the highway in Hot Spring County from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Woman mising in Clark Co.

CADDO VALLEY, Ark. (AP) — Authorities in Hot Spring and Clark counties are searching for a 58-year-old woman who disappeared near DeGray Lake.
Deborah Cronn was last seen on Arkansas Highway 7 in Caddo Valley about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The area is on the southern end of the lake near the Hot Spring and Clark county lines.
Hot Spring County authorities say the search was turned over to Clark County.

Officer hit by truck in Texarkana dies

TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) — A service will be held Wednesday for a Texas police officer who died after being hit by a truck during a disturbance at a park.

Texarkana police say a suspect was being held Sunday over the death of Officer William Sprague.

Sprague was hurt early Friday responding to a call about fights that broke out as about 100 people were at Grady T. Wallace Park. Police later arrested a man on a charge of aggravated assault of a public servant. The charge could be upgraded due to Saturday's death of Sprague.

Regatta float is canceled

June 14, 2013

There will still be music, food and entertainment, but due to high waters the Remmel to Rockport Regatta float downstream has been called off.
The event is a fundraiser presented by Sykes to benefit the First Step Foundation.
The event will still begin Saturday, June 15, but instead of noon, it will start at 4 p.m. in Rockport where Smokin’ in Style will serve BBQ at the Whitewater Park along the banks of the Ouachita River and then Tragikly White takes the stage.

Lono shooting leaves one injured

On June 9, 2013 at approximately 1:15 a.m., the Hot Spring County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Lono “Country Corner” store in response to a 911 call wherein an individual was threatening to shoot deputies, himself and others.

Deputies arrived on scene at approximately 1:30 a.m. and confronted the subject, identified as David Alexander.

Since working at the Malvern Daily Record I have been involved with a few tabs, which is short for tabloids. They are the sectional inserts dedicated to certain topics like softball, graduation, volunteers or health.
My favorite tab, that I became involved with, was “Armed Forces Day.” Go figure.
I have just heard about a new tab of ours called “A Day in the Life,” that is coming out in July.
This is going to be cuter than kittens.
Thursday, June 27 has been chosen as “The Day,” that will focus on all of our lives here in Hot Spring County.

City Park Stage is taking shape in time for Brickfest

Both Malvern Mayor Steve Northcutt and Malvern Street Department Supervisor Glenn McCloud said the stage being constructed in Malvern City Park is a huge bonus for the park, the citizens of Hot Spring County and tourism, which translates to commerce.
In last week’s Malvern City County meeting it was discussed that the original cost of the stage at the City Park would be $40,000, not the $20,000 that had been earlier figured.
A mistake in bookkeeping by one the contractors revealed Malvern would need to come up with a extra $20,000 for their part of the stage.

Smith has one book published and another ready for the press

Bob Smith taught accounting and math at Ouachita Technical College (now College Of The Ouachitas) from 1988 until 2000. Don’t worry about Smith staying busy in retirement. He has already published one book and has another ready for the press.

Smith, now living in Hot Springs Village, has written a book that he says is a “mystery, science fiction novel.”
