Lady Leopards leave Sylvan Hills behind

December 11, 2013

The Malvern Lady Leopards kept their record perfect Tuesday night with a 53-27 drubbing of the Sylvan Hills Lady Bears from the 5A Classification.
Malvern was not tested much in this game, which was their first in a week because of bad weather (they were scheduled to play in a tournament at Mena last week but icy conditions forced its cancellation).
The Lady Leopards did what they do best, which is bombard Sylvan Hills with pressure defense and convert turnovers to points.
By the end of the first quarter, with Malvern leading 14-3, it was easy to see which way this game was going.

What is the Heisman Trophy really awarding?

December 11, 2013

On Saturday, the Downtown Athletic Club will announce the winner of Heisman Memorial Trophy Award for the 79th time since its inception in 1935.
Considered one of, if not the most, prestigious individual awards in all of sports, the Heisman Trophy has become an event, stretching out the act of saying a name to an hour-long television show.
When things get warped to fit into that nice little televised viewing block with dozens of sponsorships, there is a bit of pressure to make sure the “right” people are invited to New York for the presentation.

Wintry weather still causing problems for Arkansas sports

December 10, 2013

The ice storm of 2013 will go down as one of the more disruptive weather happenings in recent memory.
When the storm was making its way toward the state last week, the Arkansas Activities Association made the right decision in postponing all of the high school football playoffs for a week.
Providing the weather stays calm this week, the playoffs will resume on Friday for the 4A, 3A and 2A classifications and conclude for the 7A, 6A and 5A classifications.

The final BCS bowl season is a bit lackluster

December 10, 2013

Well, the college football regular season is over and we now move on to the bowl season.
With the exception of one or two games, I can’t say I’m too excited about the matchups.
Of course the main event of the bowl season this year, which thankfully is the final year of the Bowl Championship Series, is the national championship game between the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (13-0) and the No. 2 Auburn Tigers (12-1).
I am actually dreading this game more than I am anticipating it.

Ouachita drops two of three in conference play

On Tuesday night, the Ouachita junior boys, senior girls and senior boys traveled to Nevada for a set of conference games, with only the Lady Warriors returning home victorious.
In the first game of the night, the Ouachita Junior Warriors fell 56-41.
Ouachita fell behind 25-4 in the first quarter and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Andy Swaim led the Junior Warriors with 15 points.

Football playoffs postponed

December 5, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Because of a winter storm warning that was issued on Wednesday for Thursday and into Friday for most counties in northwest and north central Arkansas, the Arkansas Activities Association has postponed all scheduled games for December 6th and 7th, which will extend the 2013 football season one week.

Coach and Game of the Week

December 5, 2013

After last week’s dominating 42-7 win over Green Forest by the Glen Rose Beavers, it was pretty obvious who this week’s Coach of the Week was going to be.
Until Wednesday afternoon, it was also obvious what this week’s Game of the Week was going to be the Beavers’ semifinal game against the Smackover Buckaroos.

Hunting may not be for everyone, especially me

November 22, 2013

When I was a kid, I loved going to deer camp. The actual hunting part wasn’t my favorite thing on Earth.
Deer hunting combined a couple of my least favorite things I can think of — being cold and getting up obscenely early.
Still, I was out there with my dad every year, my eyes peeled for the first sign of a deer. It normally didn’t last long because when you combine being very sleepy with being bundled up because of the cold, sleep was usually quick to find me.
