The coaching carousel is never ending

December 18, 2013

More and more it seems that college football gets divided up into different seasons throughout the year.
You have the recruiting season, the spring season, the offseason, the nonconference season, the conference season and the bowl season.
One aspect that people always seem to leave out is the coaching search season, which always seems to happen right before the bowls get good and going.

For the full column, see Wednesday's (Dec. 18) Malvern Daily Record.

Beavers back in 3A title game

December 17, 2013

The Glen Rose Beavers’ game against the Smackover Buckaroos in the semfinal round of the Class 3A playoffs was played in what many would call ideal football weather.
The temperature was low and there was constant precipitation throughout the game.
But as it was said by many Glen Rose fans, “Beavers love water.”
The Beavers (13-1), despite playing away from home (at Sykes Stadium on the campus of Benton Harmony Grove High School) for the second straight game, proved that to be the case as they dominated the Buckaroos (12-2) by the score of 54-24 on Friday night.

Malvern Little League looks to the future but needs help getting there

December 17, 2013

Over the summer, the Malvern Little League sent a team to the regionals of the Little League World Series in Waco, Texas.
The Malvern All-Stars had a good showing in the event, finishing second, and were even featured on ESPN2.
In addition to having a chance to see some of the best teams in the country, the Malvern Little League players and fans got to play on championship-caliber fields, which is something they couldn’t say before the trip.

Sponsorships lessen bowl significance

December 17, 2013

Looking over the list of bowls this season, I just have to shake my head at the vast majority of them.
There was a time when the names of the bowl games made sense.
The Peach Bowl was held in Atlanta, because the state was known for the fruit. The winning team got a trophy that looked like a bowl full of peaches. Imagine that.
Then the sponsorships came in and the Peach Bowl shared its name with its corporate partner before that partner decided the game should be named after the company and the company only.

Glen Rose advances to championship game

December 14, 2013

The Glen Rose Beavers defeated the Smackover Buckaroos 54-24 in the semifinal round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night. With the win, the Beavers advance to the Class 3A state championship game against Charleston, which will be held at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock next Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

For a full recap of the game, along with pictures, see the Tuesday (December 17) edition of the Malvern Daily Record.

Panthers pick up first win

December 13, 2013

Scoring has been at a premium for the Magnet Cove Panthers this season, but on Tuesday, they scored 33 percent more than their season average in defeating conference foe Abundant Life 40-32 at home.
The Panthers led 12-10 after the opening stanza and after a rather low-scoring second quarter, Magnet Cove went into the halftime break with an 18-14 lead.
The two teams played to an 8-8 stalemate in the third quarter, leaving the Panthers with a four-point lead at 26-22 heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

Hot Spring Count Sportlight: Elizabeth Kratz

December 13, 2013

The Poyen Lady Indians basketball team lost a lot of their scoring from last year’s state tournament team, but to watch them play this year you wouldn’t know it.
The team has been picking up wins at a regularity that fans in Poyen have gotten used to and a lot of the credit falls to senior point guard Elizabeth Kratz.
When the 2013-2014 season started, Kratz was looked upon to be the leader of the team and it was a role that she tackled head-on.

Don't underestimate fan importance

December 13, 2013

Over the last couple of weeks I have attended a great many sporting events.
While each community and student body is passionate about their school’s teams, the manner in which they support those teams differs drastically.
Take Wednesday night’s tournament game at Magnet Cove High School, for example.
It was a great game that came right down to the wire against a team that the Lady Panthers just have a hard time beating (Spring Hill).
There have been few times I have seen a crowd be into a game as much as the Magnet Cove faithful were that night.

Poyen picks up win over Cutter Morning Star

December 12, 2013

The Poyen Indians hosted the Cutter Morning Star Eagles Tuesday night and came away with a couple of big wins.
The senior high team used a big fourth quarter to erase a deficit and come away with a 73-67 victory in their first conference game of the season.
Poyen led 18-10 after the first quarter, but Cutter Morning Star kept chipping at the lead.
Cutter Morning Star outscored the Indians 23-17 in the second frame to head into the halftime break trailing 35-33.
