Playoff committee narrowly avoids catastrophe

December 4, 2014

This year is the first year of the college football playoffs (for Division I) and it was almost in ruins before the first game was played.
It still might end up as a big mess, depending on how the games this weekend go.
The first major blow to the system was when Ole Miss knocked off No. 4 Mississippi State in a convincing fashion in the Egg Bowl.
That was followed by Georgia choking away its annual rivalry game with Georgia Tech.
Those two losses made the Southeastern Conference look weaker than it is and left the SEC with just one team that could make it into the playoffs.

Malvern's matchup with Mena to determine state title participant

December 4, 2014

For the three largest classifications in the state, the championship matchups are set.
For the other three classes, there is still work to be done.
The Malvern Leopards (10-3) will go on the road on Friday, Dec. 5 to take on 7-4A Conference rival Mena. The Bearcats (11-2) got the better of Malvern the last time the two teams hooked up in Week 5.
In that game, also at Randall Whorton Field, Malvern came out on the wrong side of a 36-22 decision, which ultimately led the Bearcats to finish second in the conference ahead of Malvern.

In the first game of the evening, the Junior Warriors rallied for a 34-30 victory.
Ouachita and Sparkman were all knotted up at 6-6 after one quarter, but the Junior Warriors held Sparkman to just two points in the second quarter to take a 15-8 halftime lead.

State playoffs winding down

December 4, 2014

For three of the classifications in the state, this is the final weekend of the season, and if you are a fan of high school football, you have some great games to choose from.
In the 7A Classification, it is an all-northwest Arkansas affair with Bentonville taking on Fayetteville.
Bentonville started off rather slowly this season, dropping their first four games, but they rebounded nicely and have not lost since, even handing Fayetteville a 45-2 beatdown at the end of the regular season.

Magnet Cove open tournament with wins

December 4, 2014

The opening round of the Magnet Cove Invitational Tournament was held Monday, Dec. 1 with both of the home teams picking up wins in the first round.
The Magnet Cove Lady Panthers were up first, taking on the Lady Knights of Centerpoint. The Lady Panthers used a stifling defense to pick up the 43-21 victory.
Centerpoint hung around during the first half, however.
After the first quarter, the Lady Panthers held a 10-7 lead, which they extended to 19-14 by the halftime break.
