State playoffs winding down

December 4, 2014

For three of the classifications in the state, this is the final weekend of the season, and if you are a fan of high school football, you have some great games to choose from.
In the 7A Classification, it is an all-northwest Arkansas affair with Bentonville taking on Fayetteville.
Bentonville started off rather slowly this season, dropping their first four games, but they rebounded nicely and have not lost since, even handing Fayetteville a 45-2 beatdown at the end of the regular season.

Magnet Cove open tournament with wins

December 4, 2014

The opening round of the Magnet Cove Invitational Tournament was held Monday, Dec. 1 with both of the home teams picking up wins in the first round.
The Magnet Cove Lady Panthers were up first, taking on the Lady Knights of Centerpoint. The Lady Panthers used a stifling defense to pick up the 43-21 victory.
Centerpoint hung around during the first half, however.
After the first quarter, the Lady Panthers held a 10-7 lead, which they extended to 19-14 by the halftime break.

Razorbacks end regular season on sour note

December 4, 2014

It was strange watching Arkansas finish its regular season with the Missouri Tigers.
You would think that would be a natural rivalry, but no matter how much those in the media would like it to be, it’s nowhere near there yet.
Even when the two schools regularly played each other in basketball (before Missouri joined the conference), I never really looked at them as a rival.
It’s hard to take a team seriously when you beat them by 52 points and only lose two games over a 23-year period.
Sure, the Tigers have won the last three in the series and have had the Razorbacks’ number in football.

Raptors Wrestling team finishes third

December 4, 2014

The Raptor Wrestling team, composed mainly of youths from Glen Rose, had a big performance at King of the Mountain III at Mountain Home.
With just seven wrestlers competing, the Raptors had a third-place finish.
Brayden Phillips (Glen Rose) picked first in his division at 10 and under, he also took first place in the 12 and under division as well.
Rhodney Phillips (Glen Rose) also picked up first place in Division 4, netting 18 team points.
Joshua Handloser placed first in Division 3 (70 pounds). Isabella McGuire finished second in Division 3 (70 pounds).

Razorbacks likely will not be overlooked again

November 28, 2014

All right, I will be the first to admit that I did not think the Arkansas Razorbacks would win against a top 10 Mississippi team over the weekend.
After coming off the shutout win over LSU the week before, everyone was riding high on the Hogs, but I just couldn’t allow myself to buy into the hype.
I kept telling people that one game doesn’t make a trend. After Saturday’s complete annihilation of Mississippi, I am starting to think I was wrong.

Lady Leopards have up and down week

November 28, 2014

The Malvern Lady Leopards, the two-time defending Class 4A state champions, opened up their 2014-2015 campaign with a tough set of games in a tournament at Bauxite last week.
They started off on Monday, Nov. 17 against the England Lady Lions, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, coming from behind for a 62-58 victory.
Malvern jumped out quick on England, taking a 17-12 first-quarter lead, but was outscored 19-6 in the second quarter to head into the locker room down 31-23 at the half.

Ouachita and Glen Rose split games on Monday

November 28, 2014

On Monday, Nov. 24, Ouachita High School hosted Glen Rose High School for a set of four basketball games at All-Care Court. By the end of the night, both schools came away with two wins.
In the first game, between the junior girls’ teams, the homestanding Junior Lady Warriors of Ouachita picked up a hard-fought 39-34 victory.
Ouachita led 10-6 after one quarter, but the Junior Lady Beavers staged a big comeback in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 21-20 heading into halftime.
