Hot Spring County Sportlight: Isaac Wright

November 21, 2013

When you imagine the typical defensive lineman, what comes to mind?
A mean, hard-hitting player that enjoys the punishment he inflicts upon his opponents?
Most of the time, yes.
What about a soft-spoken and polite student council president with a love of poetry?
Not usually, which is what makes Malvern senior nose guard (and occasional right guard) Isaac Wright something different.
Wright heads up the defensive front line of the Malvern Leopards, who are in one of their best three-year stretches in decades.

This Week's Coaches and Game of the Week

November 21, 2013

One round of the football playoffs are behind us and the second round is just a day away.
The local teams that had first-round games made the most of their opportunities, coming away with big wins.
Because of that, we will have multiple Coaches and Games of the Week this week.
For the Coaches of the Week, we have Malvern head coach Mike Scarbrough and Magnet Cove’s Ronnie Efird.

For the full column, see Thursday's (November 21) Malvern Daily Record.

On Monday night, the Ouachita Junior High girls and boys traveled to Haskell to take on the Benton Harmony Grove Junior High Cardinal teams.
The first game of the night saw the Junior Lady Warriors of Ouachita coming away with a 35-16 victory.
Ouachita fell behind early, trailing 6-5 after the first quarter, but rebounded with a big second quarter to lead 21-11 at the half.
In the second half, the Junior Lady Warriors’ defense was front and center, holding Benton Harmony Grove to no points. Ouachita added nine points in the third quarter to hold a 30-11 lead heading into the final frame.

Glen Rose and Poyen split four games

November 20, 2013

It may still be football season for some, but the Glen Rose Beavers and the Poyen Indians proved they were ready for basketball on Tuesday night.
Glen Rose won the two junior high games of the night, while Poyen defended their home court in the two senior high games.
In the first game of the night, the Glen Rose Junior Lady Beavers defeated the Poyen Junior Lady Indians by the score of 40-35.
It started off as a low-scoring game, with Glen Rose holding a small 6-2 lead after the first quarter.

Officials must be held accountable for their actions

November 20, 2013

I got to catch the tail-end of the Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers the other night.
Even though I’m pretty much a fan of the Pats, I thought it was a rather exciting game.
When Cam Newton completed the pass to give the Panthers the lead with around a minute to play, I was a bit let down, but I figured as long as New England had Tom Brady they were good to go.
With three time outs remaining, Brady lived up to his Hall of Fame billing and drove the Patriots down the field, putting them in position to win on the last play of the game.

Breaking down the schedule — Glen Rose

July 26, 2013

In our last installment, we broke down the schedule of the Malvern Leopards in the 4A Classification.

Today, we’re going to step down one class and look at the Beavers of Glen Rose, a team that made it to the 3A state championship game. They seemingly had the game won, but Harding Academy set up a brilliant set of plays in the last half-minute to score a touchdown and win the game.

MLB scandals ruining all of the progress

July 24, 2013

As I read more and more about the most recent scandal involving Biogenesis and Major League Baseball, a simple saying comes to mind — “Now this is why we can’t have nice things.”

Scandals and baseball are nothing new. In fact, the most underhanded scandal in baseball history happened almost 100 years ago with the Black Sox.

When you factor in the Pete Rose gambling problem and the steroid era of the late 1990s through now, it’s hard to believe we can still get worked up over misdeeds performed by professional baseball players.

But here we are, embroiled in yet another scandal.

NCAA lawsuit could have long-lasting effects

July 23, 2013

For years I have been beating the drum saying that college athletes should receive some sort of compensations for their work (not to mention the obscene amount of money they help bring to their university).

The comeback to that argument is the old stand-by of “but they get a free education!” And that would be a valid retort, if not for the fact that most universities lose nothing by giving out a scholarship and often give away truckloads per year.

We welcome any and all sports-related pictures

July 19, 2013

One of the many things I love about my job is how involved the community is when it comes to sports.

Whenever there is an event out of town that I cannot make it to, someone usually supplies a picture from the event so the kids can get the recognition they deserve.

Soon we will be starting a new weekly segment that consists solely of submitted photographs.

This is where you get to shine.
