Lady Lions split games this week

April 10, 2013

The Bismarck Lady Lions softball team had an up and down week this week.
On Monday, they went on the road and blasted Prescott 14-3, but they fell to Benton Harmony Grove 4-2 in a game that was shortened to five innings because of lightning concerns on Tuesday.
In the Prescott game, the Lady Lions wasted little time asserting their dominance, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Prescott would answer in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
From there it was all Bismarck.

The Magnet Cove Panthers baseball team picked up a couple of wins recently.
On Tuesday, March 26, the Panthers took a trip to Woodlawn and returned with a 1-0 win.
Junior pitcher Conner Wells picked up the win, striking out 16 batters in just six innings of work.
Freshman Josh Smeltzer’s offense helped the Panthers take the lead for good in the seventh inning.

Time for an overhaul of the rules

April 10, 2013

I love sports, I really do. I love everything about them, with the glaring exception of one thing — the over-increasing number of rules being made each year that serve no real purpose other than to change the sports we love.
Today, I thought I would take you through my own personal list of rules that I would do cartwheels in the street for if they were abolished.
• The charge circle
In basketball recently, they added a little semicircle underneath the basket to show where a defender is too close to the goal for a charge to be called.

Bismarck struggles on the road against Prescott

April 9, 2013

The Bismarck Lions baseball team took to the road on Monday to face the Prescott Curley Wolves, coming out on the wrong end of an 8-7 decision.
Bismarck started strong, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and another in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Prescott would fight back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third and again with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2.

For the full story, see Tuesday's Malvern Daily Record.

Leopards pick up home win

April 9, 2013

On Friday, the Malvern Leopards baseball team played host to conference foe Arkansas Baptist and came away with a 6-3 victory.
Arkansas Baptist struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Leopards would get on the board for the first time in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run of their own to tie the game.
Arkansas Baptist would cut into the lead slightly with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, but from there it was all Malvern.

That's what a title game should look like

April 9, 2013

I had no dog in the fight leading into last night’s basketball national championship game between the Louisville Cardinals and the Michigan Wolverines.
All I was wanting was a good, close game, and boy, did I ever get just that.
I’ve been going through all of the national championship games I’ve ever seen and I cannot recall a final that I have enjoyed more than that one since 1994 (for obvious reasons).

The basketball season reaches its conclusion

April 5, 2013

For fans of the Arkansas Razorbacks, this has been a long and drawn-out season and many are glad it is finally over.
Though there are some of us basketball junkies that love this time of year and mourn its passing.
This evening, the last four teams standing will square off to see who gets to play in Monday night’s national championship game.
Many regard Louisville as the odds-on favorites to win it all, but I think it is anyone’s game at this point.

Magnet Cove postseason basketball awards for 2013

April 4, 2013

The Magnet Cove Panthers and Lady Panthers definitely had different seasons this year.
It took the senior boys’ team a little while to find their groove and put a series of wins together.
The Panthers did make a run in the district tournament and nearly made some noise in the postseason.
The Lady Panthers had much more success this season.
After a rough non-conference schedule, the Lady Panthers ran roughshod through their conference and with the exception of a non-conference game against Jessieville, Magnet Cove did not lose a game between December and the state tournament.

Lady Indians bounce back after losses

April 4, 2013

The Poyen Lady Indians softball team had a rough go at it a week ago, falling to Magnet Cove and Fordyce by a combined score of 28-0.
This week, however, the Lady Indians have gotten back on track and picked up a few more wins.
On Monday, Poyen traveled to Cutter Morning Star where they faced the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Indians breezed through the game, winning by the final of 16-6.
Cassidy Nichols was on the mound for Poyen and wound up with 10 strikeouts in the game while walking four Cutter Morning Star batters.
