Razorbacks likely will not be overlooked again

November 28, 2014

All right, I will be the first to admit that I did not think the Arkansas Razorbacks would win against a top 10 Mississippi team over the weekend.
After coming off the shutout win over LSU the week before, everyone was riding high on the Hogs, but I just couldn’t allow myself to buy into the hype.
I kept telling people that one game doesn’t make a trend. After Saturday’s complete annihilation of Mississippi, I am starting to think I was wrong.

Lady Leopards have up and down week

November 28, 2014

The Malvern Lady Leopards, the two-time defending Class 4A state champions, opened up their 2014-2015 campaign with a tough set of games in a tournament at Bauxite last week.
They started off on Monday, Nov. 17 against the England Lady Lions, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, coming from behind for a 62-58 victory.
Malvern jumped out quick on England, taking a 17-12 first-quarter lead, but was outscored 19-6 in the second quarter to head into the locker room down 31-23 at the half.

Ouachita and Glen Rose split games on Monday

November 28, 2014

On Monday, Nov. 24, Ouachita High School hosted Glen Rose High School for a set of four basketball games at All-Care Court. By the end of the night, both schools came away with two wins.
In the first game, between the junior girls’ teams, the homestanding Junior Lady Warriors of Ouachita picked up a hard-fought 39-34 victory.
Ouachita led 10-6 after one quarter, but the Junior Lady Beavers staged a big comeback in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 21-20 heading into halftime.

The 7-4A is standing tall

November 28, 2014

Not too long ago, I penned a column comparing the 7-4A Conference to the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference.
As we get ready for the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A playoffs, it looks like my assertion was not far off.
Of the eight teams remaining in the playoffs, four of them hail from the 7-4A Conference.
That number definitely will drop in the semifinal round, as two conference foes (Arkadelphia and Mena) face off this week.

Poyen boys lose at home

November 28, 2014

Poyen High School hosted Bismarck High School for a set of games on Monday, Nov. 24, with the visiting team coming away with wins in two of the three boys’ games.
In the seventh grade boys’ game, Bismarck came out as a 14-12 winner after trailing 8-5 at the half.
For Poyen, Lance Austin was the leading scorer with seven points. Layton Austin added four points.

Big weekend for the MCHS Lady Panthers

November 28, 2014

The Magnet Cove Lady Panthers, as well as the Junior Lady Panthers picked up big wins on Saturday and Monday, respectively.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, the Magnet Cove senior girls traveled to Fountain Lake and improved their record to 3-0 with a 45-40 win over the Lady Cobras.
The Lady Panthers had to fight back from a sizeable first-half deficit to force the extra period en route to picking up the win.
Fountain Lake held a slim 7-6 lead after one quarter and pushed that lead to 19-11 at the half.

When the game stands tall

November 28, 2014

There is a famous quote, which has been attributed to various people through history that states: “Sports do not build character, they reveal it.”
Anyone that has spent a significant time around athletes knows there is no truer statement.
All too often we hear all about the bad things that athletes are capable of. The media is partially responsible for that, because the more salacious the story, the more people want to tell it.

Little Rock looms for Leopards, Yellowjackets

November 28, 2014

The Malvern Leopards (9-3) are once again in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs this week, thanks to an upset over top-seeded, and previously undefeated, Pea Ridge on the road a week ago.
Their opponent this week, the Clinton Yellowjackets (9-3) are also coming off an upset of top-seeded Pine Bluff Dollarway, allowing the Leopards to host this week’s game.
The winner of this week’s game will move one step closer to the state championship game at Little Rock’s War Memorial Stadium in two weeks.

Today could be a big day for Arkansas fans

November 28, 2014

It is that magical time of year — when the college football and basketball seasons overlap.
Today, Arkansas fans are in for a treat, first with the football team, then later tonight with the hardwood Hogs.
If all goes well, the Razorbacks could be on the road to having a very good football and basketball team in the same season (I’m looking ahead to 2015).
With a win this afternoon on the road against No. 20 Missouri, the football Razorbacks will be 7-5 and put themselves in a position for a possible Cotton Bowl bid.
