The Malvern Leopards (8-3) picked up a 44-22 win over the Cave City Cavemen (5-6) in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs at Claude Mann Stadium on Friday, Nov. 14.
While the final score indicates a blowout, Cave City actually held its own with the Leopards for the better part of the first half.
In fact, it was the Cavemen that struck first, on a 60-yard touchdown run with 8:17 left in the opening stanza to take a 8-0 lead after the two-point conversion.

Why do I love basketball so much?

November 12, 2014

I am a huge fan of the game of football, but when you get to the root of things, I am truly a basketball fan at heart.
Maybe it is because my high school didn’t have football when I was a student — and seeing them host a playoff game this week is rather surreal to me.
Growing up, it was all about basketball. I was on the kindergarten team in Wheeling, Mo. before my family moved back to Arkansas.
When we got here, I played basketball whenever I could and joined the peewee team in fourth grade.

Ouachita leaped ahead 20-8 in the first quarter and increased that lead to 31-14 by halftime.
The Lady Owls of Abundant Life were held to just one point in the second half by the suffocating Ouachita defense.
Amanda Weldon paced the Lady Warriors with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

It’s that time again — the 88th meeting of the Battle of the Ravine is set for Saturday, Nov. 15 and both the No. 9 Ouachita Baptist Tigers (9-0) and the No. 14 Henderson State Reddies (8-1) come into the game riding momentum from their wins on Saturday, Nov. 8.
The Tigers trounced the Boll Weevils from the University of Arkansas at Monticello by the score of 47-10 to clinch a share of the Great American Conference championship.
The game was decided in the first half as the Tigers tallied 283 yards and 44 points on offense while allowing just 84 yards to the Boll Weevils.

A look at the 2014 Class 2A playoffs

November 12, 2014

For the last few years, there has been a saying in the 2A Classification — the state championship runs through Junction City.
The Dragons (8-0) are the two-time defending state champions and have won four titles since 2008. Currently, Junction City is riding a 35-game winning streak and will be a problem for any team with aspirations on a deep trip in the playoffs in the upper part of the bracket.
Two teams from this area — the Poyen Indians and the Magnet Cove Panthers — will look to make their own marks in this year’s field of 30 teams.

A look at the 2014 Class 3A playoffs

November 12, 2014

For the last nine years, there has been a staple in the Class 3A playoffs that is missing this year — the Glen Rose Beavers. The Beavers’ loss on Friday night knocked them out of contention for the playoffs for the first time since 2005 — two years before their state championship.
Hot Spring County will still be represented in this year’s 3A playoffs by the Bismarck Lions, who are making their first trip back to the postseason since 2012 (when they went to back-to-back playoffs).

The Leopards will face off against the Cave City Cavemen at Claude Mann Stadium at 7 p.m. and are looking to make their way deep into the playoffs.

The Malvern Leopards (7-3 overall and 5-2 in the 7-4A Conference) secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 4A playoffs with a 47-34 win over the Arkadelphia Badgers (7-3 overall and 5-3 in the 7-4A Conference) at Claude Mann Stadium on Friday, Nov. 7.
In the first half the game, the story was the Malvern defense stopping Arkadelphia at almost every turn and holding the Badgers offense scoreless in the first two quarters.
In fact, the only Arkadelphia score came on a long punt return by the Badgers.
