The Magnet Cove Panthers (7-3, 5-2 in the 5-2A Conference) needed some magic Thursday night to avoid having to go on the road for the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Thanks to their 33-6 blowout home win over Cutter Morning Star and a narrow win by England at Poyen, the Panthers picked up the No. 3 seed in the 5-2A Conference.

Glen Rose dominates on Senior Night

November 4, 2014

It was senior night at Glen Rose on Friday, Oct. 31, but it was the younger crowd that helped lead the Beavers (2-7 overall, 2-4 in the 5-3A Conference) to a 30-7 victory over the Horatio Lions (0-9 overall, 0-6 in the 5-3A Conference).
It was not the Glen Rose offense, nor its defense that got the first score of the game. Facing a fourth down deep in its own territory, the Lions elected to punt, but the snap went through the hands of the punter, forcing him to kick it out of the back of the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead for Glen Rose with 7:34 to go in the first quarter.

Bismarck sunk by Prescott 52-14

November 4, 2014

The Bismarck Lions (4-5 overall, 2-4 in the 5-3A Conference) could not keep up with the overpowering Prescott Curley Wolves (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the 5-3A Conference), falling by the score of 52-14 at home on Friday, Oct. 31.
Prescott was the first to put points on the scoreboard, finding the end zone on a 40-yard pass with 10:48 remaining in the opening stanza to go up 7-0.
Bismarck would have an answer for that score with a 75-yard touchdown scamper by Zack Roberts. The point-after attempt was no good and the Curley Wolves retained the lead at 7-6 with 9:00 left in the first quarter.

Magnet Cove can't hold on against Eagles

November 4, 2014

The Magnet Cove Panthers (6-3 overall, 4-2 in the 5-2A Conference) needed a win on Friday, Oct. 31 to keep their hopes alive for a fourth-straight conference title.
For much of the road game at the Conway Christian Eagles (8-1 overall, 6-0 in the 5-2A Conference), it looked like the Panthers might pull it off, before succumbing to the homestanding Eagles by the score of 17-14.
The Panthers struck first on a 15-yard touchdown run by Josh Smeltzer with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter. Smelter’s point-after attempt was good and Magnet Cove held a 7-0 lead.

Leopards see title hopes Scrapped

November 4, 2014

The 7-4A Conference has been a meat-grinder for its members this season, but as the season neared its conclusion, two teams began to emerge from the pack — the Malvern Leopards and the Nashville Scrappers.
On Friday, Oct. 31, the Leopards (6-3 overall, 4-2 in the 7-4A Conference) traveled to face the Scrappers (8-1 overall, 5-1 in the 7-4A Conference) and came up just short of having the top spot in the conference all to themselves after a 28-26 loss.

Nothing better than small-town sports

October 29, 2014

There’s just something magical about being from a small town.
When I was growing up, I really didn’t care for it much because everyone knew everyone and there were very few surprises. But once I left and lived in more populated areas, I came to realize how important the small town atmosphere is.
Nowhere is that more evident than in the realm of sports. There are six schools in this area, and all of them are known for their sports teams.
If you are out and about in this state and you mention you are from Malvern, you will inevitably have someone ask you about the Leopards.

The role of the band in sports

October 29, 2014

A band can be one of the most important aspects in home field advantage for a football team — when it is done right.
As anyone who has attended a big-time game can attest to, the band is crucial for keeping the spirits of the home crowd up during the slower moments of the game, such as time outs and quarter breaks (not to mention the long halftimes).
In my years covering sports, I have seen all sorts of bands, at both football and basketball games. I’ve seen them perform well, and I’ve seen some bands that left me wondering why they were even there.
