Little Rock looms for Leopards, Yellowjackets

November 28, 2014

The Malvern Leopards (9-3) are once again in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs this week, thanks to an upset over top-seeded, and previously undefeated, Pea Ridge on the road a week ago.
Their opponent this week, the Clinton Yellowjackets (9-3) are also coming off an upset of top-seeded Pine Bluff Dollarway, allowing the Leopards to host this week’s game.
The winner of this week’s game will move one step closer to the state championship game at Little Rock’s War Memorial Stadium in two weeks.

Today could be a big day for Arkansas fans

November 28, 2014

It is that magical time of year — when the college football and basketball seasons overlap.
Today, Arkansas fans are in for a treat, first with the football team, then later tonight with the hardwood Hogs.
If all goes well, the Razorbacks could be on the road to having a very good football and basketball team in the same season (I’m looking ahead to 2015).
With a win this afternoon on the road against No. 20 Missouri, the football Razorbacks will be 7-5 and put themselves in a position for a possible Cotton Bowl bid.

On Tuesday, Nov. 25, the Magnet Cove basketball teams got one more game in before the holiday with a road trip to Mena.
The previously undefeated Lady Panthers suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the 4A Classification’s Lady Bearcats, but they weren’t the only ones.
Both the junior boys and senior boys stumbled on the road and came home with losses.
The first game of the night saw the Magnet Cove Junior Panthers fall to Mena by the score of 48-18.
The Junior Panthers were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 14-0 after the first six minutes.

Thursday Night Football 11/13
Miami (6-4) 22 vs
Buffalo (5-5) 9

Miami QB Ryan Tannehill threw 2 second half touchdowns to rally a comeback victory over Buffalo. Buffalo was moving the ball up and down the field early, but could not seem to find the end zone to cap drivers. They clung to a 9-3 lead as they kept Miami in check. Tannehill was able to rally his team’s offense to score 19 unanswered points to seal the game and second place in the AFC East.

Maybe the Hogs have some fight left after all

November 18, 2014

I have said before that I enjoy being proven wrong on certain occasions.
Last week, I had picked the Arkansas Razorbacks to lose at home to LSU (a top 20 team), even though the Hogs were favored in the game.
I took a break from moving to Malvern to sit down with my father to watch the game Saturday night, fully expecting my prediction to come true.
Even when Arkansas took the early 10-0 lead, I kept waiting for that other shoe to drop, as it had so many times during that seasons-long conference losing streak.

Lady Warriors make it look easy

November 18, 2014

On Thursday, Nov. 13, the Ouachita Lady Warriors hosted the Lady Eagles from Benton Harmony Grove and had little trouble dispatching the visitors by the score of 60-28.
The Lady Warriors outscored Benton Harmony Grove 13-6 in the first quarter to set the tone for the game.
Caroline Burnett hit the first of her three 3-pointers to help give Ouachita the advantage.
In the second quarter, the Lady Warriors saw their lead grow to 30-16 by the time the two teams broke for halftime.

Glen Rose Beavers off to perfect 2-0 start in 2014

November 18, 2014

A season ago, the Glen Rose Beavers basketball team showed great improvement, and that trend has continued on to the 2014-2015 season.
The Beavers started this season with two big wins (one on the road and one at home) to start the season with a perfect record.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Beavers had little trouble with Lisa Academy at home, winning the game going away 42-22.
Glen Rose jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, but led just 20-14 at the half.

The Bismarck Lions (4-7) saw their season come to an end thanks to a 52-19 road loss to the Smackover Buckaroos (10-1) on Friday, Nov. 14.
Smackover led 46-0 at the half, but the Lions were able to get on the board.
The first score came on three-yard run by Ben Ramirez with eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Lions also got a three-yard run for a score in the fourth quarter.
