James King 7-on-7 was a breath of fresh air

July 12, 2013

For the vast majority of Wednesday afternoon, I was in a state of euphoria.

The first, in what I and everyone else hopes will be an annual event) James King Memorial 7-on-7 football tournament was held at Malvern High School’s Claude Mann Stadium.

Despite the oppressive heat, which was a bit overbearing even for this Southern boy, the event was a resounding success.

Losses are never fun, but some are worse than others

July 11, 2013

A discussion got started recently here in the Malvern Daily Record office about the success of past football teams like the 2011 Malvern Leopards and the 2012 Glen Rose Beavers.

Both teams ran roughshod over most of their opponents during the regular season and earned a spot in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock for the state championship game in their respective classifications.

The two teams also had something else in common, and that is they both failed to win the state championship. The big difference is how the two teams lost.

The Magnet Cove Junior High and High School track teams have been a force to be reckoned with all year long.
They proved that at the district track meet this week with the Lady Panthers and Junior Lady Panthers taking home first place and the Panthers and Junior Panthers garnering runners-up status.
The Magnet Cove Junior High Lady Panthers track team won their district championship with a total of 228 points, well ahead of second-place England’s 89 points.

District tournaments underway

April 26, 2013

Two local teams played their first games of the district tournament season yesterday, with both moving on to the next round.
In baseball, the Poyen Indians dug themselves out of a 2-0 first-inning hole to earn an 11-2 win over Mount Ida, while the Glen Rose softball team made short work of E-Stem 11-1 yesterday.
Those two wins set up a big day of baseball and softball today as the district tournaments roll on.

The sports pages needs the community's help

April 26, 2013

There are few things on the planet that I enjoy more than bringing all of you the latest local sports scores and stories.
But this time of year it can be especially hard to make sure that everyone gets their information into the newspaper.
With spring sports alone, I am covering 15 different leagues (high school baseball/softball/soccer, several Little Leagues, youth softball and T-ball) that include roughly 103 teams.
That means I’m out every night taking pictures of games throughout the county. But for the most part, I can’t get to everyone.

Malvern teams split with CAC

April 12, 2013

On Monday, Malvern’s baseball and softball teams made a trip to Little Rock to take on Central Arkansas Christian in a conference matchup.
The Lady Leopards came from behind to win their game 9-8, but the Leopards couldn’t mount a big enough rally and fell by the score of 3-2.
In the softball game, Malvern scored the first run in the top of the first inning when Macy Holyfield reached on a base hit and was driven home by a Koree Walsh double.
Tayonna Bailey was on the mound for Malvern and held CAC scoreless in the first inning.

Taking a bite out of the Big Apple

April 12, 2013

At the end of the work day today my vacation will start and by this evening I will be in New York City enjoying all the city has to offer.
Being a sports guy, my list of things to do in the Big Apple include a trip to Madison Square Garden to see the Knicks play, as well as Yankee Stadium for a Yankees game.
If time permits, I may even try to take a train down to Boston to visit Fenway Park and see the Green Monster in person.

Lady Leopards flush with honors for 2013 season

April 11, 2013

The 2012-2013 season was a good one for the Malvern Lady Leopards basketball team.
Not only did they win the 4A state championship with a record of 32-2, they were virtually unstoppable the rest of the season as well, picking up win after win and tournament title after tournament title.
Some of the accolades that came the Lady Leopards’ way during the season included being the champions of the Spa City Shootout, 7-4A Conference champion, district champion and regional champion.
Individual Lady Leopards also were also recognized for their play during the year.

The correlation of colors and championships

April 11, 2013

All my life I have been a huge basketball fan (Arkansas for most of that time), but I have always had a core group of teams that I absolutely despised.
It didn’t matter who these teams were playing, I always rooted for their opponent (unless of course it was one of my other hated teams).
But once I started to think about it, I noticed that all of the teams I had a grudge against had something in common — aside from being the perennial “super teams” — the primary color for each of these schools was blue.
