Bismarck wrestling team excels in state tournament
On Friday and Saturday, the Bismarck wrestling team took part in the 2013 state wrestling tournament at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Bismarck was grouped with all schools from Class 1A to Class 5A and came out of the tournament with a fifth place finish behind Maumelle (first), Beebe, Central Arkansas Christian and Little Rock Christian.
The team did well as a group, but there were many individual performances that stood out for the Lions.
Aaron Whitehead placed third (going 4-1 earning 22 points) in the 160-pound weight class, Cody Burrow placed third (going 3-1 and earning 22 points) in the 220-pound weight class, Austin Phillips placed fourth (going 3-2 and earning 20 points) in the 152-pound weight class, Shelby Orr finished fourth (going 3-2 and earning 20 points) in the 195-pound weight class, Cody Isom placed sixth (going 3-3 and earning 15 points) in the 138-pound weight class and A.C. Clayton finished sixth (going 2-3 and earning 11 points) in the 170-pound weight class.
Others wrestling for Bismarck were Nick Stancil in the 132-pound weight class (1-2 and five points), Robert Martin in the 182-pound weight class (1-2) with two points, Jackson Helm in the 145-pound weight class (0-2 and no points), Zac Reese in the 126-pound weight class (0-2 and no points) and Tristan Phillips in the 285-pound weight class (0-2 and no points).
The Glen Rose wrestling team was also present at the state tournament and finished in 22nd place, sending just two wrestlers to the championships.
Aimee Wright, in the 145-pound weight class, finished the day at 1-2, earning two points.
Matt Bonds, in his first year wrestling, participated in the 170-pound weight class and dropped both of his matches by pin.
The Lions wrestling team is coached by Lewis Jolly and assistant coach Jessie Walker.
The Beavers wrestling team is coached by Doug McGuire.
