The Malvern Daily Record is seeking teachers and sponsors to participate in the newspaper’s annual Newspapers in Education (N.I.E.) program. Each school year, the MDR, with the help of community sponsors, sends about 75,000 newspapers into area classrooms, according to MDR Publisher Richard Folds.
Teachers use the newspapers as learning tools in a variety of classes to help students gain knowledge of local current events and build vocabulary, math and critical thinking skills. MDR Circulation Manager Kathi Ledbetter recalls getting to read the MDR when she was a student. “We looked forward to getting to read the paper in our English, math and social studies classes,” she said. That previous experience makes her glad to participate in coordinating the N.I.E. project now.
Teachers who would like to receive papers in their classrooms twice weekly, free of charge, may contact Ledbetter at the MDR office. The program begins Sept. 9. Local businesses or organizations who want to sponsor the program may call MDR Advertising Manager Michelle Cummins. Both may be reached at (501) 337-7523.
