Sponsorships lessen bowl significance

December 17, 2013

Looking over the list of bowls this season, I just have to shake my head at the vast majority of them.
There was a time when the names of the bowl games made sense.
The Peach Bowl was held in Atlanta, because the state was known for the fruit. The winning team got a trophy that looked like a bowl full of peaches. Imagine that.
Then the sponsorships came in and the Peach Bowl shared its name with its corporate partner before that partner decided the game should be named after the company and the company only.
Because of that, we no longer have a Peach Bowl. Instead, we have the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

For the full column, see Tuesday's (December 17) Malvern Daily Record.
