When I was a kid, I read all the Erma Bombeck books I could get my hands on. She was the witty/sarcastic/funny-as-heck mom who wrote syndicated columns and was featured on one of the national morning shows. I thought that being a mom would be just like the tall tales she wrote of in books like If Life’s a Bowl of Cherries Why am I Always in the Pits and The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Septic Tank.
Boy, was I right.
I knew it from the moment I argued with both grandmothers about whether my brand new baby had just smiled. My own mother looked at me and chuckled. “It’s gas,” she said. My mother-in-law told me that babies don’t smile that early. At least she didn’t laugh. The next day, however, both were crowded around the bassinet watching my daughter smile and laugh.
The laughter hasn’t stopped.
My husband asked the other day what I want to do for Mother’s Day this weekend. I told him I want to play Colony-opoly.
