Turning off Internet could be good idea (By Gretchen Ritchey)
Ever been in a rut? Most of us have been in a rut at some point in our life. Whether it be daily routine activities, work or depression, it’s all still a rut.
Yep, I’m in a rut. One that I can’t seem to jump from and stay out of.
My daily routine isn’t my rut, it’s more of an artist’s block rut. I so badly want to draw, paint, sculpt, build, anything art. But, I have a blockage. Although visually I can see what I want, my hands are bonded and are unable to work with my brain to produce the image I so badly want to see in real life.
I sit at home in the evening thinking to myself, “I really should be drawing,” …”maybe tomorrow,” myself says back. And it never gets drawn.
This problem is partly to blame on social media. Growing up I didn’t have a lot of friends who hung out together so having all those school friends and new friends on social media makes me feel like someone.
My friend, Sharon, loaned me a book she checked out at the library about drawing horses, mind you they are my favorite subject to draw. And, yes, I have drawn and painted many horses in the past, but it never hurts to see what someone has to say about producing art.
I have decided that for two nights out of the week, to start, I will put down social media, my computer and all other forms of Internet. My husband is an avid Craig’s List surfer, so he’ll be putting down that, too. I’m hoping that this will help give me the push I need to get out of the rut, and not fall back in.
It’ll be hard but I think we can do it.
