My appreciation to Bennie Lambert for driving us to the monthly meeting of the HSC Historical Society in Malvern on Monday, July 7.
Since this was the annual social, the time was changed to 6 p.m. rather than the usual time of 7 p.m. Who would have guessed that most historians are also good cooks? Potluck at these events is always enjoyable. It was good to talk with Jessie Ashford who was a teacher at Bismarck high School from 1936-1937. She and three other young women boarded with a Sanders family there. Others present were Louise and Fred Davidson, Sue Coates, Kenney Black, Paul Adcock, Mary Evelyn and Homer Lawrence, Catherine Rutherford, Bonnie Stanley and Velma and Ralph Sandage who had recently attended large Sandage Family Reunion outside Donaldson, which was over a three day period. We commented on Velma’s squash casserole and her recipe is: two cups yellow squash cooked with one-half cup of chopped onions, two cups saltine crackers crumbled, one cup milk, four tablespoons butter, two eggs, one cup grated cheese, one-third cup sugar, salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients and pour into a buttered casserole dish and bake for 35 minutes in a 350 degree oven. She had used a mixture of yellow and zucchini squash. Patsy (Lambert) and husband LeRoy Bannach of San Diego, Calif., are visiting with her sister, Laverne Ashley near Amity. Several ladies were invited to meet for dinner at a Glenwood restaurant on Tuesday evening. Patsy will also attend her Amity High School class reunion on July 25. Congratulations to Megan (Garner) and Jeremy Allen of Bismarck who have been selected as the Hot Spring County Farm Family for 2008. They have two young children, Lane and Brody, she works at a bank in Arkadelphia, they care for cattle, chickens, trucks, equipment, belong to organizations and evidently have very high levels of energy. His parents are Carla and Jerry Allen who themselves go at a very fast pace with many jobs. Best wishes for the next competition level and beyond. Fifty-one members of the late Delmas and Evelyn (Emory) Burton family met recently in Mountain View for a reunion. Reservations had been made early, and some were worried after Jack’s Resort was flooded, but things were repaired by the holiday weekend. The Neal and Anna Shirley Burton group included their children, Darrie, Phillip and Phyllis, but Rhonda Jackson was working. Corine Hall, who was in a camper, fixed breakfast for everyone. Some of her children and grandchildren were there, including Judy. Frank Burton was ill, but all of his children and grandchildren were present and several are out of state and live in Georgia, Memphis and one in military in Oklahoma. Kathleen and Norman King, Jr. and all children except Greg and his family were present. There were some eye procedures for one of his grandchildren during the period. Their daughter, Cheryl was there from California. This family is in my Burton book printed in 1996, but children have grown up and married and I really need to post newspaper clippings and bring information up to date. Winnie Sheets Sharp was happy to see granddaughter Angie over the Fourth of July weekend, but was surprised that she admitted to being tired. Angie was recently in China on business with her company, and that is not a relaxing flight or an easy place to visit. Patricia Jean Grickis, 66, died July 6 in Hot Springs. She was the daughter of the late Hilbert and Lois Phillips. Survivors are three daughters and three siblings. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lambert. Thurman R. Allen, 90, of Bismarck died July 11. He was predeceased by his parents, Andy and Lue Ellar Phillips Allen, a daughter who died in 1948, and a step-son. Survivors include his wife, Lannie Holt Allen; his five children, Jerry and Carla Allen, Terry Allen, Hilda and Benito Ochoa, Evon Teague and DeWana and Frank Sharp; step-children Wanda (Holt) and Dean Richardson and Carolyn (Holt) and John Welch and several grand and great-grandchildren. Burial was in the New Bismarck Cemetery on Monday. |
