By James Leigh - Sports Editor It was a good night for football, and that is exactly what people got to see last night at Glen Rose.
The Beavers hosted a team camp last night, allowing three other area teams to work on their 11-on-11 skills. Malvern, Magnet Cove and Arkadelphia all participated in the camp. Glen Rose head coach Mark Kehner said that he thought the camp was successful in its intention. “I thought it was a good night,” he said. “I think it was good for everybody. It gave everyone the opportunity to get better — to see their weaknesses and strengths.” The camp lasted for approximately two hours. The night started with 20 minutes of varsity offense and 20 minutes of varsity offense for each team, before a short break. After the break, the junior varsity teams took the field for 20 minutes of play on each side of the ball before a final 40 minutes for the varsity squads. Kehner explained that the set-up allowed each team to work on both sides of the ball and correct any mistakes they made easier than in a game-type situation. Magnet Cove head coach Ronnie Efird was proud of the way his team played. “We played pretty well,” he said. “We have a pretty good group of kids.” Efird liked the way the camp was set up for the teams. “I love what we did tonight,” he said. “We got to work on the bad plays and correct them right there. That’s what really helped.” Malvern head coach John Fogleman thought his team made improvements throughout the night. “It went pretty good,” he said. “We saw a lot of improvement from the beginning of the night to the end, and in a practice situation that is what you hope for.” Fogleman said that the ability to coach the offense between plays and the defense between sessions was helpful. “The way it is set up, you get a lot of reps,” he said. “You get some time to coach the offense between plays, and that is helpful.” The teams are looking to take to the fields at least one more time before two-a-days start in August, but a date and time have not been set.
