Law enforcement officers from around Hot Spring County will host those of Grant, Saline and Clark counties in the third annual "Battle of the Blue" softball tournament at Morrison Park today, 9 a.m.
For the past two years Hot Spring and Clark have been the only two participating counties, but organizers have achieved their goal of expanding the event. All funds raised will go to the family of Deputy Jake Weldon, who is currently in Dallas, Texas, receiving treatment for cancer. His family has been making the trip to Dallas every weekend and are there much as they can be, but as we all know, gas prices are skyrocketing. Donations will be requested at the gate but are not required for admission. Concession stand purchases will all go the family as well. After the day's second game there will be a homerun derby open to the players as well as spectators. Each participant will have 10 swings to hit as many homeruns as possible. In the event of a tie, a 5-swing round will decide the champion — first place will receive a small trophy and $20. Second and third will receive $10 and $5. The double-elimination tournament is open only to law enforcement officers, but the homerun derby is open to anyone for an entry fee of $5. |
