By James Leigh — Sports Editor The Malvern High School varsity cheerleaders recently attended the National Cheerleading Association Summer Camp in Lake Ozark, Mo.
The squad represented the school well, bringing home all but one of the awards from the camp. Their awards included: • Six superior ribbons — one for every performance. The superior ribbon is awarded to the team who displays strong technique, leads the crowd well, and performs with no noticeable mistakes. • Four Spirit Sticks — one for each day at camp. The sticks are handed out to the squads showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm for the day, while taking into account attitude during classes, promptness, cooperation, relationships with other squads, leadership, etc. • Herkie TEAM Award — This plaque is awarded to only one squad that shows true team spirit, unity and leadership throughout the week. • Spirit award — This megaphone is awarded to only one squad that has added the most spirit to the camp all week. • Champion Chant Award (trophy) - Every squad competes for this award on the last day of camp, and it is awarded to a varsity squad and a junior varsity squad. • Team award certificate — Squads vote each night for one team that has demonstrated all the qualities of an ideal team. •Technical Excellence Award certificates — These certificates were awarded for jumps on two separate occasions. The evaluation group voted on the team they felt best demonstrated that skill technique for that particular night. Bids for NCA National Events — This certificate was awarded to the squads who exemplified positive qualities as a team. Teams that received this award were evaluated by their designated NCA staff on a list skills while at camp. Additional requirements include: positive attitude, earning a spirit stick and showing good sportsmanship. The squad also had a total of 10 members who were named All-American nominees. Team members were selected by NCA instructors. They must display superior cheerleading techniques in any of the following areas: jumps, tumbling, stunting, motion technique, leadership and dance. These individuals had the opportunity to tryout for the NCA All-American team. Five of nine that tried out for All-American Cheerleader made the team. Cady Baker, Jamal Barker, Ellen Crumby, Kathleen Couch and Mylee Scarbrough each received a medal for All-American cheerleader. Baker also received the Individual Leadership Plaque.
