"I told them before we started, 'I'm looking for a couple of things tonight: intensity and execution," said Magnet Cove head coach Ronnie Efird.
Apparently the Panthers were listening. Their defense did not allow a touchdown in either of their two varsity games at the Jessieville Jamboree on Tuesday, and the offense never turned the ball over. Also, Magnet Cove did not commit a penalty. "They played well, but we've still got a long way to go," Efird said of his squad. "We've got our basic offense down, so maybe we can move on to widen the offense a little more." Efird had a few concerns defensively. He said the Panthers started out "sluggish". "Also, our secondary was out of position a few times," he added. "We just can't do those things with the teams we're playing this year." While at the jamboree, Efird had a chance to get a view of Mount Ida, the host of Magnet Cove's season opener scheduled for 7 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 5. "They threw the ball pretty well," he said of the defending AA State Champion Lions. Magnet Cove's match-ups at the jamboree were with Gurdon and Ola. The Panthers will not face either of the two during the upcoming season. Magnet Cove's junior varsity also played against those of Gurdon and Ola as well as Poyen. "Our JV looked good, too — we've got a lot of depth," Efird added. "We're well on our way. I think we've got the tools to get us there." |
