By Paxton Penny Malvern played a 20-snap scrimmage with Pulaski Academy Tuesday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium and later faced-off against Greenbrier for an entire half. It was the Leopards' final exhibition.
"We did a lot better against Greenbrier," stated John Fogleman, who is entering his second season as the Leopards' head coach. Malvern will kick off the regular season next Friday Sept. 5, 7 p.m. at Claude Mann Stadium against Sylvan Hills. KEEPING SCORE Malvern prevailed with a 14-0 win in the scrimmage against Greenbrier. "We did well at times, but we talked about it." commented Fogleman. "We've got a long way to go to get where we want to be." Malvern's two touchdowns both came off big plays. James King scored on an 82-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Justin Jones, and Oliver Archie later rushed in from 35 yards out. "But in between there we really didn't have any sustained drives," said Fogleman. "So that's what we're working on right now — going out there and having an 8, 9, 10-play series instead of just one big play." On defense, Fogleman said that the Leopards made some good plays but showed some inconsistency, however, he said that senior outside linebacker Zane Shnaekel stood out. "He was real solid defensively," added Fogleman. ON SYLVAN HILLS Fogleman and his crew got a good look from the sidelines at their upcoming season debut opponent, Sylvan Hills. "They were very, very good defensively," he said. "They're having to replace some guys on offense, but they're still going to be good — it's going to be a tough challenge for us." |
