LaVeta Janet (Bennett) Phelps departed this life peacefully to live for eternity with her heavenly Father, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Baptist Medical in Little Rock, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
She was born June 15, 1946, in Malvern, the only daughter of five children of Melvin Davis and Juanita (Foster) Bennett. She was a long time dedicated member of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Magnet Cove and a current member of Panola Missionary Baptist Church in Lonoke, Ark., where her husband, Richard Phelps, pastors. For the past 12 years, she was a medical records analyst for HSC Medical Center in Malvern. She was a loving, committed wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, friend and employee who will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched and enriched. She is survived by her husband, Richard Phelps of Malvern; her sons, their wives and her grandchildren, John D., Monica and Shelby Clemons of Magnet Cove and Jason, Kim and Hannah Clemons of Malvern; her mother, Juanita (Foster) Bennett of Magnet Cove; four brothers and their wives, Jerry Bennett, Dave and Relda Bennett, Richard and Alta Bennett and Joe and Pam Bennett, all of Magnet Cove; two daughters, T.J. (Phelps) Flack of Jacksonville and Tanya (Phelps) Simpson of Lake Hamilton; eight additional grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; her closest and most beloved friends, DeeDee and Jerrell Dolloff and godchildren, Cindee and Scott Dolloff, all of Arlington, Texas; her church family in Christ and her many friends and co-workers at HSC Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her father. Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Regency Funeral Home in Malvern. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Magnet Cove with Brother Chris Garner and Brother Robert Wirges officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her brothers, Jerry, Dave, Richard and Joe Bennett; nephew, Toben Bennett; and lifelong friend Roy Sulton. Family and friends will be at the home of Jerry Bennett in Magnet Cove. Immediately following services, food and refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall at the church.
