Congressman Mike Ross began his 29-county Town Hall Tour Monday with a stop in Malvern.

Congressman Mike Ross began his 29-county Town Hall Tour Monday with a stop in Malvern to address citizens at the Malvern/Hot Spring County Chamber of Commerce. Ross discussed the economy and busy legislative session in the standing room only meeting. “I believe it is crucial for members of Congress to get out of Washington and visit with and listen to the people that they represent,” Ross said before the tour began. “I look forward to hearing from people throughout Arkansas’s Fourth Congressional District as we work together through these tough economic times.”
Ross began the tour in Arkadelphia at 9 a.m. before traveling to Malvern. From Malvern Ross went to Sheridan, Pine Bluff and Star City.
Ross said the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act would create 31,000 jobs in Arkansas, including 7,300 for the Fourth Congressional District. Ross said $3 billion would be invested in Arkansas, including roads, schools, energy, small business loans and health care over the next two years. There will be $500 million used to modernize the state’s roads, bridges and infrastructure. Funding would be provided to modernize at least 106 schools in the state to enhance science labs, classrooms and libraries. College educations are said to become more affordable for 44,000 families.
There will be $400 tax credit for individuals making less than $75,000 per year and $800 for families making less than $150,000 and $250 for those receiving Social Security, disability or veterans benefits.
It will offer and additional $100 per month in unemployment insurance to 185,000 Arkansas workers recently laid off in Arkansas.
