MFD can put a face on their MDA fundraising campaign
Friday, 03 July 2009

Every year the Malvern Fire Department has a ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign to help raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The money raised locally goes to those in need in the area.
Not long ago, while dining at the Waffle House, firefighters were approached by Cindy Pettit, an employee there, who thanked them for what they had done raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and their ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign. She told them that through their efforts her son, Devin, was able to attend Camp Aldersgate this year through the money they had raised. The firefighters were unaware that there was anyone locally who would benefit from their work.
The firefighters got to meet Devin and it finally gave them a face to put with their efforts in raising money for the MDA.
Chris Brewster of the Malvern Fire Department said that last year the International Association of Firefighters donated approximately $28 million to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, making them the third largest contributor to the MDA.
After meeting with Devin, the Malvern Fire Department contacted the State MDA, and spoke with Justin Wise, the coordinator for the State chapter, and told them that they wanted to make Devin the ambassador for the MDA in the Malvern area. After talking with Wise and getting his okay, the Malvern Fire Department made Devin the Ambassador for the MDA here in Malvern.
Wednesday evening Devin and his family joined firefighters at the North Malvern Fire Station where Devin and his sisters helped firefighters wash the fire trucks.
After washing the trucks,  Devin and his family along with firefighters were treated to a supper of pizza and breadsticks.
A good time was had by all. Devin said that he looks forward to doing it again.
