Bismarck pitcher Colton Hughes delivers a pitch in Saturday’s 12-9 victory over the Indians.
By LaJuan Mooney — Sports Editor The Bismarck Lions made the trip to Poyen on Saturday to play in the Annual Indian Classic and came home with a 12-9 victory.
The Lions sat the Indians down in order in the first inning with strike outs from Devin Roark and Luke Nannamann then senior AJ Phillips hit a long fly to left field that was caught by Andrew Williams. The bottom of the first resulted in a one run lead for the Lions after Jesse Prevatte drew a walk from Indian pitcher Dylan Stanton. Prevatte stole second on a passed ball, then Colton Hughes singled to score Prevatte. Stanton struck out the next three, Michael Hardage, Trent Turner and Baswell, to end the inning 1-0 Bismarck. Stanton started the second with a double. Bryan Wilfong popped up to the third baseman for the first out. Stanton moved on to second on a passed ball. Kyle Schoggin hit up the middle back to the mound. The ball was bobbled allowing Schoggin to reach first safely and Stanton to score. After moving around the basses on passed balls Scoggings scored on another one to give Poyen a 2-1 lead. The Indians held the Lions in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the third the Lions’ pitcher Colton Hughes once again sat the three lead off Indians down in order this time with the help from his defense. In the bottom of the third, Prevatte drew the walk again and scored the Lions only run in the inning to knot the game at 2-2. The Indians were scoreless in the fourth as were the Lions. The Lions brought Trace Pee to the mound in the fifth, but not before the Indians had tacked on four runs to go up 6-2. The defense of the Indians held the Lions scoreless in the fifth to maintain their lead. Poyen added two more in their half of the sixth to extend their lead to 8-2. The Lions were down but not done, and before they were through with the sixth 10 runs had crossed the plate to give the Lions a 12-8 lead. The Indians managed to plate one in the top of the seventh, but left the basses loaded as the last two batters KOed to end the game at 12-9. Poyen’s first baseman Tyler Emerson takes the pick-off throw from the mound as Bismarck’s Tyler Eads makes it back to the bag safely.
