Verbal confrontation results in gunfire
Tuesday, 29 January 2008
By Steve Good
A verbal altercation ended in gunfire Saturday morning and one person remains in St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs following surgery, according to Hot Spring County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. John Keding.
Keding, a criminal investigator, said Lane Montebrook Penn, 28, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound sustained in the incident.
Penn, who investigators believe is from Amity, was shot on the property of Alfred Jack, 69, at 405 Apple Road in Bonnerdale, Keding said.
Keding said Jack placed an emergency call at 12:18 a.m. telling operators that “someone” had tried to take a gun away from him. He placed a second call at 12:29 a.m., Keding said, telling operators that he had “shot someone who was drunk.”
Keding said Hot Spring County deputies, Garland County deputies and Arkansas State Police troopers responded to the scene along with an ambulance crew. Apple Road marks the county line in the area, Keding said, and Jack’s property was determined to be in Hot Spring County.
According to Keding, a verbal altercation between Jack and Penn turned physical. Keding said Jack’s weapon discharged, striking Penn at “extremely close range.” Jack told investigators that he did not intend to shoot Penn, Keding said.
Keding said it appeared that both men had been drinking at the time of the incident.
Keding said investigators located a shell casing near where Penn was shot and seized a rifle suspected of being used in the shooting.
Penn was transported to the Hot Springs hospital where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound, according to Keding.
Keding said he expected to conduct a second interview with Penn late Monday at the hospital.
No arrests were made at the scene, Keding said, noting that the investigation is ongoing and that HSC investigators will turn the case file over to prosecutors for their review when the investigation is complete.
