Future Problem Solving is an excellent extra-curricular activity which engages students in creative problem solving. It was founded in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance, FPS stimulates critical and creative thinking skills and encourages students to develop a vision for the future.
Glen Rose schools has participated in State Competition for 20 years, and at least one Glen Rose team or individual has represented Arkansas at the International Future Problem Solving Conference (IFPS) seven times. In fact, at least one team has won state and represented Arkansas for the last five years. The Glen Rose School District has graciously provided the funding for our state representatives in the past, but the cost for a small school district can be tremendous. Last year Glen Rose sent 12 students to Fort Collins, Co. for the International Conference with an estimated cost of $10,000. This year the district is paying registration for the students and the fee for the school coach. As a result, the parents and students are fundraising to finance the trip so the burden on individual families will not be as great. State Competition took place in Hot Springs April 26, 2008. Five Glen Rose students will be representing Arkansas IFPS in Lansing, Mich. on May 29-June 1, 2008. We are beginning our fund raising efforts at this time. We are asking for donations from within the school district and from family and friends, and we will be hosting a large rummage sale. Our estimated cost for the students is $2,500. This includes traveling to Michigan and registration and participation fees. Any donation will be appreciated. We hope to be able to raise this entire amount. These donations are tax deductible since they will be going directly to the school to defray the costs. Melissa Elrod FPS coach. |
