By Paxton Penny - Sports Writer The Malvern Lady Leopards advanced to the second round of the State Tournament at Harrison with a 4-0 first-round shut-out win over Pulaski Robinson yesterday afternoon.
Malvern scored once in the first inning and rallied for 3 in the third. Ashley Boyles and Sydney Holyfield each slapped a homerun. Boyles added a double. She finished with 3 RBI. Holyfield hit a single and finished with 1 RBI. Amanda Draper contributed 2 singles and a triple. She crossed home plate twice. Jasmyne Smith slapped a double, and Samantha Lee and Morgan Hobbs each contributed a single. “We hit the ball well,” commented coach Mike Scarbrough. “We had ten hits but only four runs. We were hitting the ball hard, but they were catching them.” The Senators had no errors. Mylee Scarbrough was sent to first twice after being hit by pitches. Erica Barkley pitched the entire game for the Lady Leopards and gave up no walks while allowing only 2 hits. She finished with 9 strikeouts. Malvern will play today at noon, again in Harrison, against Harrison. “We played okay — we got through the first round,” said Scarbrough. “That’s the main thing. We’re very fortunate to be going to the second round.” |
