Statistics indicate fuel consumption is down. It’s a “shock” thing. Fuel consumption did the same thing in the 1970s when it climbed, for the first time ever, over $1 a gallon. But then motorist got used to paying $1. Then $1.50. Then $2.
Don’t look for the motorists to continue to conserve much longer. Not too many weeks ago motorists went into shock when gas hit $3 a gallon. Now it’s over $3.50 a gallon and the shock from that will wear off. Count on it. It will get to a point that lifestyles will change, if they haven’t already. People might look for homes closer to their work or work closer to their homes. Motorcycle sales have doubled, one radio report stated Thursday, during the course of the past 12 months in the United Stated. How the American auto makers weren’t prepared for this is the real mystery. In the 1980s Chevrolet made a car that got 60 miles a gallon. Where’s that car these days? Discontinued. It seems Americans are not prepared to make long-term drastic changes. They would like to think this problem will just go away. It won’t. It will worsen. Don’t get your hopes up for quick solutions. There aren’t any. |
