The Magnet Cove Lady Leopards are on a roll.
They breezed through the district tournament two weeks ago and the regional tournament last week.
Last night, they played their first game in the 2013 2A state tournament at Marmaduke High School.
As the No. 1 seed from their region, Magnet Cove was matched up against a No. 4 seed, Pangburn.
At first it appeared the Lady Panthers were going to blow out Pangburn, but the pesky No. 4 seed wouldn’t go away until the end.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Panthers picked up a 70-62 victory to move on to the next round of the state tournament.
Magnet Cove started strong, leading 25-10 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the three-point shooters from Pangburn came alive and closed the gap to 41-34 at the halftime break.
The Lady Panthers increased their lead, ever so slightly, in the third quarter and held a 53-45 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
In that final quarter, Pangburn made a run and even cut the deficit to four points late in the game before Magnet Cove eventually pulled away.
Erin Pankey led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 22 points. Laney Gibson was not far behind with 21 points. Shelby Stone scored 13 points and Bethany Sullivan added eight points.
Next up for Magnet Cove is a game in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday.
