Banner year for Hot Spring County Sports

May 22, 2013

This fall will mark my 15th year in the field of journalism (sports in particular) and I have been racking my brain to think of an athletic year that has been as successful for the teams that I have covered.
In just the 2013 calendar year alone, two state champions were crowned — the Malvern Lady Leopards basketball team and the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers softball team.
Another team, the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers track team finished just four points shy of the state championship.

2013 2A State Champion Magnet Cove Lady Panthers

May 21, 2013

On Monday, the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers softball team was running a gamut of emotions from shock to jubilation to downright confidence.
And why not? Just two days prior, on Saturday, May, 18, the Lady Panthers won the 2A state softball championship in a game that could only be described as pure domination.
Their motto for the last couple of years has been “We Own The Dirt,” and that has been more than evident this season.
In Magnet Cove’s 10 postseason games, they allowed a total of two runs, and close to as many hits.

Magnet Cove wraps up conference track season on top

April 26, 2013

The Magnet Cove Junior High and High School track teams have been a force to be reckoned with all year long.
They proved that at the district track meet this week with the Lady Panthers and Junior Lady Panthers taking home first place and the Panthers and Junior Panthers garnering runners-up status.
The Magnet Cove Junior High Lady Panthers track team won their district championship with a total of 228 points, well ahead of second-place England’s 89 points.
The 4X800-meter relay team of Katie Dorsey, Lyndsey Hamby, Paiton Scrivner and Abby Holland finished first with a time of 11:33.42.

District tournaments underway

April 26, 2013

Two local teams played their first games of the district tournament season yesterday, with both moving on to the next round.
In baseball, the Poyen Indians dug themselves out of a 2-0 first-inning hole to earn an 11-2 win over Mount Ida, while the Glen Rose softball team made short work of E-Stem 11-1 yesterday.
Those two wins set up a big day of baseball and softball today as the district tournaments roll on.
